HOW TO BE STYLISH

Got quite a few emails from you guys asking me to post style tips. To get us started, here are the more useful tips I compiled from the book “How to Walk in High Heels: The Girl’s Guide to Everything” by Camilla Morton (with a foreword by John Galliano).

1. When dressing up, a mood must be established. Do this with scented candles and music, especially when getting dressed for special occasions where you want to look extra fab.

2. Always dress to impress. Imagine you are a celebs just like the ones featured on Steal That Look, and that you have the paparazzi following you everywhere you go. Never give anyone the satisfaction of seeing you looking unkempt.

3. Ideally, you should lay out your clothes the night before so that you have time to “live with it” as well as make sure that all the buttons are attached and that they are immaculately pressed. If struggling, a good a good pair of shoes can make any outfit. Likewise, a bad pair can do irrevocable damage.

4. For makeup, aim to look like a girl on the pages of a magazine. But comfort yourself with the knowledge that even they have never seen themselves look that good. The natural, no-makeup look is good for a regular day.

5. Pay attention to lingerie. Don’t let it go past its “wear-by” date! Throw it out when it stars to look old, frayed, or faded. The book says bra and panty “must match,” but we say mismatched undies in pretty colors, fabrics, and prints work just as well, and sometimes even look cuter.

6. Perfume is one of the few remaining legal sorceries we have left, so use it to your advantage. Layer a few squirts all over your body before you put on your clothes so it can soak into your skin.

7. For your hair, which the book basically ignores, either blow-dry for a put-together look, or apply a leave-on product and air-dry for a sexy tousled look. Pin back on bad hair days – this is still good as it shows off your neck and looks more delicate.

8. Shoes – according to the book – “the higher, the more expensive, the better.” Steal That Look’s take on this: be on the lookout for sales of designer brands. But whether designer or tiangge brands, always look for a stylish pair that has excellent quality and is reasonable comfortable.

9. Another thing the book doesn’t mention is the bag – how could they forget the bag! Just like shoes, they can pull an outfit together. Choose the best quality you can afford, and take good care of it. You can wear your tiangge finds with a designer handbag and designer shoes bought on sale, and you can look like a million bucks. And please, please, do not buy buy fake brands in Greenhills, Divisoria, Shenzhen, or anywhere else! If you can afford the most expensive labels, look for more affordable ones like Kenneth Cole, Nine West, or Mango. Or check out local brands with excellent quality, like Fino, Tru, and Tint.

10. Apply lip gloss, give yourself a thorough once-over while facing a full-length mirror (don’t forget to check you back view too) – and you’re off! Have a stylish day ahead!

style tip - don't follow trends, just choose what fits and flatters your body best. wear what looks good on you rather than what looks good on models on the runway, and you'll always look stylish ;)

don't spend too much on overly tremdy items that you'll just be getting rid of at the end of the season... do spend on good quality basics that you'll wear/use year after year, like a travel coat, jeans that make you look long and lean, shoes you can wear to work or to a night out, and a really really nice bag.

Even a simple top and jeans can look stylish with fac accessories! Invest in long necklaces, unique jeweled pieces made of semiprecious stones, antique-style lockets, layered necklaces, gold hoops in various sizes, interesting bangles, an of course, shoes and bags galore!

borrow your mom's old stuff and mix-match them with your own stuff. they'll give your outfits a unique vintage feel. vintage hand-me-downs are the best!
